The capital of Lassithi prefecture since 1904, Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque town in the eastern part of the island built on the northwest side of the peaceful bay of Mirabello. It is named after the charming 7th century Byzantine chapel of St.Nikolas, erected on the spot called “Nissi” during the 7th AD century, with its bell tower, drum and dome. The chapel has a number of well-preserved frescoes of the 19th, 10th and 11th centuries and rewards its visitors with a breathtaking view of the town and bay. The name Agios Nikolaos means Saint Nicholas who is the patron saint of sailors and of all of Greece. Agios, as it is referred to by all the islanders, retains a traditional, quaint and tranquil fishing town lifestyle which hasn’t lost its charm with its busy tourist infrastructure.
The small, especially well attended port of Agios Nikolaos, has its own charm, as it is surrounded by the picturesque tile-roofed houses and it is illuminated in the evenings by the lights of the shops and those of the “kaikis”, fishing boats moored at the big dock. This is their starting point of their day trips to Spinalonga, Elounda and the picturesque Mirabello Bay. Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and the whole of Europe through Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklio and many daily ferry services in Heraklion Port. Two ships directly connect Agios Nikolaos daily with the ports of Piraeus, Sitia and Aegen islands of Milos, Santorini, Karpathos, Kassos, Kos, and Rhodes. In this site you can find a list with amazing Agios Nikolaos Hotels.

Heraklion city is a common busy and noisy town. It is the business, administrative and commercial center of the Prefecture and of the whole island, partly due to its large port. Even though Heraklion is not the ideal place for relaxation holidays it can offer many options to a traveler. First of all, you can find many lodging alternatives in a wide price range. In addition there are numerous restaurants, cafes and nightclubs where you can taste the local cuisine and enjoy the nightlife of this vivid city. Heraklion has many interesting places which you can visit, ranging from monuments of the Minoan civilization to Venetian castles and traditional markets. Heraklion is located in the north part of the island and its closest beach is Ammoudara. Last but not least, you can consider Heraklion city as your base from which you will explore the wider area’s unique beaches and traditional villages.

Crete Lodging offers a huge amount and variety of holiday accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. There’s a plentiful supply of cheap and cheerful pensions, camp sites and youth hostels geared to the needs of budget travellers and backpackers. Masses of mid-range hotels and apartments cater for the hordes of package holidaymakers who descend on the island each summer and you’ll also find a generous helping of top of the range deluxe hotels likely to strain even the healthiest of bank balances.
It’s risky to turn up on spec at any of the main tourist destinations without a reservation in July and August though you may strike lucky if you persevere and are prepared to take whatever’s offered. If you visit outside the most popular months (June to September) you’ll be able to get a discount of 50% or more on high season prices if you hunt around. But expect to pay top rates if you’re visiting at Christmas or Easter. Freelance camping on the beaches was common in the sixties but is now frowned on by the police and many of the islanders. There are plenty of well-equipped official camp sites dotted around the island’s coastline but many backpackers still take the risk of camping out in secluded spots. Breakfast is included in the room price at many of the island’s hotels and the more upmarket establishments lay on in-house entertainment such as weekly Cretan nights with traditional music and dancing.
Package Crete holiday accommodation is largely concentrated in the frantic seaside resorts of Hersonissos and Malia on the northern coast east of Iraklio. The beachfronts are lined with hotels of all standards but most are block booked by the tour operators months in advance. You’d be ill advised to pitch up in either resort in high season without a booking though you might find a last minute bed in Malia’s old town which has numerous rooms and cheap pensions geared towards independent travellers rather than package holiday tourists.

The Crete Golf Club is situated at Hersonissos, near Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and it’s the first full 18-hole golf course to have been built on this beautiful Greek Island. The 6430-yard, par 71-desert style course has two loops of nine, which seamlessly blend into the existing landscape. The slopes, visible rocky ground, groundcover pants and absence of trees provide a character, which is easily identifiable as Crete.
Each hole has a selectlon of 4 tee beds, providing a challenge for all golfers whatever their standards. Where the scratch golfer will fInd the course a tough enough test from the back tee, the novice will find the forward tees more suited to their game. For the farways, we have selected Paspalum as the grass type. This requires the minimum amount of water whist providing the maximum drought resistance. Tifdwarf will be used on the greens where a finer turfgrass is needed.
The course also comes with the full range of practice facilities for novice golfers, tourists and golf club members. ThiS includes a double- ended covered driving range with practice bunkers, short game area and practice putting green. There is also a second put- ting green adjacent to the first tee.
